Import a PDF table with Excel's “Get Data from PDF”
Excel for Windows (Microsoft 365 and recent stand-alone versions) has a built-in PDF connector in Power Query. It works well on cleanly tagged tables and less well on bank statements.

Steps
- Data › Get Data › From File › From PDF, choose the file.
- The Navigator lists detected Table items and whole Page items. Click each to preview.
- Pick the table(s) and Load, or Transform Data to clean in Power Query (promote headers, change types, remove summary rows).
Combine a table that spans many pages
Statements usually produce one table per page. In Power Query: select all page tables, use Append Queries as New, then remove repeated header rows with a filter. Make sure each page's columns line up – if one page is detected with an extra column, the append misaligns.
“From PDF” is missing
- Excel for Mac doesn't have the PDF connector. Microsoft lists it for Windows only.
- On Windows, it needs Microsoft 365 or a recent version with .NET Framework 4.5 or later; older Office 2016/2019 builds may not show it.
- Organisation policies can hide connectors.
Table is empty or columns are merged
- Scanned PDF: there is no text to read. See scanned statements.
- Statements without ruling lines: Power Query guesses columns from spacing and often merges description and amount, or splits a date across two columns.
- Wrapped descriptions: a two-line description becomes two rows – the second with no date or amount.
When a statement reader is easier
Columnry is built for statements: it finds the date/description/debit/credit/balance columns across all pages, joins wrapped lines, infers missing years, and checks every row against the running balance, so you see at a glance whether something was missed. It runs in any browser, including on a Mac.
Try your statement. Columnry reads the transactions in a text-based PDF statement or table – date, description, money in/out, balance – checks them against the running balance and exports Excel, CSV, OFX or QIF. It runs in your browser; the statement is not uploaded. Preview the whole file free and export page 1 (up to 20 rows); a 30-day pass is $9, lifetime $29.
Questions and answers
Can Excel Online import PDFs?
Power Query in Excel for the web supports fewer sources; check your plan. Converting to CSV first always works.
Does it work with password-protected PDFs?
Remove the password first (open and save an unprotected copy in a PDF tool you trust) – see password-protected statements.
