Get a bank statement into Google Sheets
Google Sheets can't import PDFs. The reliable route is PDF → CSV → Sheets, with attention to date and number formats on the way in.

1. Get a CSV
Check online banking for a CSV/Excel download first – many banks offer it. If you only have PDFs, convert them: open the statement in Columnry, review the detected columns and the balance check, and export CSV.
2. Import into Sheets
- File › Import › Upload › choose the CSV.
- Separator: detect automatically (or comma).
- Untick Convert text to numbers, dates, and formulas if your dates or amounts use a different locale than the spreadsheet.
- File › Settings › Locale – set it to the country of the statement so 31/12/2026 and 1.234,56 are understood.
3. Clean and categorise
- Add a Category column; filter the description column by a keyword (e.g. a supermarket's name) and fill the category for all matching rows.
- Pivot table: Insert › Pivot table, rows = Category, values = SUM of Amount.
- Check: SUM of amounts should equal closing − opening balance.
Try your statement. Columnry reads the transactions in a text-based PDF statement or table – date, description, money in/out, balance – checks them against the running balance and exports Excel, CSV, OFX or QIF. It runs in your browser; the statement is not uploaded. Preview the whole file free and export page 1 (up to 20 rows); a 30-day pass is $9, lifetime $29.
